Harworth is building a great new place called Waverley, near Rotherham. The brand-new homes, retail and community hubs, and wonderful green spaces under development will be the perfect backdrop to a vibrant new community. The Group wanted to teach Waverley’s younger residents about the importance of respecting each other and keeping the town clean and tidy. They needed to find a Conestant force for good in communities across Yorkshire to help them communicate their important social message to their young audience.

Fortunately, Chris Madeley was on hand to tell Waverley’s story in a special 14th edition of her award-winning series of children’s books, The Cones. The new story will thread the magic of community spirit through an explanation of how new communities get built and why looking after the local environment is so important for residents.

The book will cover the following main themes.

How regeneration happens

The humble traffic cones witness the daily comings and goings of lorries full of material to and from this former coal mine. They are perfectly positioned to give children a quick explanation of how Waverley was built and why their hometown is so special. They can also reassure them that construction heroes have got rid of anything nasty which could have made them ill!

Harworth’s role as ‘master developer’

Who organises everything when towns get built? Where do you put the park, the school, or the medical centre? What shops do you have? The Cones will answer all these questions, as well as letting children know about the great career opportunities that they can enjoy in town planning when they’re older.

How housebuilders are making everyone’s homes safe and secure

Communities are only great if everyone can live in great quality housing. The Cones will explain to their young audience how housebuilders stop water from leaking through the roof and onto their tea.

Exciting career opportunities in engineering

From making cars, to engines, to products that people use every day; Waverley’s new AMP (Advanced Manufacturing Park) offers so many different opportunities for the future. The Cones will explain how everyone can make amazing things happen if they work hard enough.

Making the most of green spaces

With beautiful parks and lakes around Waverley, there’s somewhere for everyone to walk and cycle. The Cones will encourage their young readers to exercise as much as possible, while admiring all the different bird species in the area.

Playing an active role in their community

From enjoying the community garden, to helping out at school or getting involved with the parish council when they get a bit older, there are lots of different ways for young people to help make Waverley a better place. The Cones will explore all the possibilities.

Creating sustainable transport

Getting from A to B is important. Travelling in a way that protects the environment matters even more. The Cones will explain what Harworth is doing to stop travelling around Waverley from damaging the town’s environment.

An amazing place called Olive Lane

Olive Lane will be Waverley’s town centre. Shops, a gym, restaurants, a medical centre and so many more local businesses will make this special place the heart of the community. The Cones are very excited about the developments on Olive Lane and will tell all their friends about them.

The Cones Books are helping corporate Britain to teach children the importance of safety, environmental awareness and social cohesion. These delightfully entertaining stories are helping key businesses to strengthen communities as well as infrastructure.
