Sammy’s first job was a teaching post at Grosvenor Grammar School. He later became the Head of Economics at the school and also served as Assistant Chief Examiner for A-Level Economics for the CCEA exam board in Northern Ireland.

Sammy began his political life as the Democratic Unionist Party's Press Officer. He 1981 he was elected as a DUP councillor to Belfast City Council and later became Lord Mayor.

In May 1996, Sammy  was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly upon its creation in June 1998, he was also successful in the 2003 Assembly Election where he served as Minister of Finance and Personnel after serving as the Minister for the Environment. He was then successful when he stood for the Parliamentary elections in 2005 where he has been the MP for East Antrim ever since.

Sammy fought hard for Brexit as he thinks the United Kingdom would be better out of the shackles of EU rule.   He is still the DUP spokesperson on Brexit.

Sammy denies that Climate Change exists and that over time there have always been times of warming and cooling on the earth.  He believes that we should be using fossil fuels of which the UK have an abundant supply which would create jobs and help to make fuel more affordable,  to the poorest in our society instead of inflicting levies on bills for wind power etc which is expensive to produce.

He also spoke out during the time of the covid outbreak, against closing the country down, the wearing of masks and mass vaccinations.

Out of politics, Sammy is a keen gardener and a motor cycle enthusiast and he is well known for his sense of humour.
