David Harris
As a young boy David developed an interest in transport, especially railways and buses, travelling from Folkestone to Rochdale to visit grandparents. On leaving school he completed an apprenticeship, and worked for ten years, in the motor vehicle repair industry. He then joined the Engineering department of South Kent College of Technology where he was engaged as a workshop and laboratory technician in motor vehicle, fabrication and welding, and mechanical science. Over a period of thirty three years, he helped many young people in their technical education. In 1985 David became a founder member of the East Kent Light Railway Society, and soon after was appointed Secretary. He was later elected Chairman of the Society (charitable), which after a number of years became a limited liability charitable Trust. With a friend he founded a registered charity to help disadvantaged people in Moldova. For a short time, he was a trustee of a Bus Preservation Trust. David continues as Chairman of the EKR Trust, and as a practical preservationist, can always be found with either a spanner or a pen in his hand.
